Reflective gear plays a crucial role in traffic management by significantly enhancing visibility and safety for workers and road users. Here are the key aspects of its importance:
  1. Increased Visibility: Reflective clothing, especially high-visibility vests and jackets, dramatically improves the wearer's visibility in low-light conditions or high-traffic areas. The reflective materials used are designed to be visible from all angles, helping oncoming traffic notice workers more easily12.
  2. Accident Prevention: By making workers more visible, reflective gear reduces the risk of accidents and fatalities in busy environments with vehicular traffic, such as construction sites, marshaling yards, and industrial premises. This is particularly important in areas where forklifts or other machinery operate, as these can be relatively quiet12.
  3. Legal Requirement: In many jurisdictions, the use of high-visibility clothing is mandatory for certain occupations, especially those involving traffic management. Employers are often required by law to provide adequate and serviceable high-visibility clothing to employees exposed to traffic-related risks2.
  4. Versatility: Reflective gear is not limited to just vests. Full-body high-visibility clothing, including reflective trousers and jackets, may be necessary depending on the ambient lighting and work environment. This is especially crucial in traffic management roles where maximum visibility is required12.
  5. Identification: Beyond safety, reflective gear can serve as a means of identification. It helps distinguish authorized personnel in controlled or restricted areas, making it easier for visitors to identify staff members. This uniformity also promotes a sense of team spirit among employees1.
  6. Adaptability: Reflective gear comes in various forms to suit different conditions. Lightweight options are available for summer use, while thicker, insulated versions are suitable for winter. This adaptability ensures that workers can remain visible and safe in varying weather conditions2.
  7. Standards Compliance: High-visibility clothing must meet specific standards, such as BS EN 471 in the UK and Europe. These standards ensure that the clothing is conspicuous and reflective, providing a consistent level of safety across different manufacturers2.
  8. Cost-Effective Safety Measure: Implementing the use of reflective gear is a relatively simple and inexpensive precaution that plays a major role in maintaining safety and preventing accidents in traffic management scenarios2.
By incorporating reflective gear into traffic management protocols, organizations can significantly enhance the safety of their workers and the public, while also complying with legal requirements and industry best practices.

  • 00:00 Hi I'm officer Asheville with the Central Point Police Department and you're watching a new episode of traffic safety. First. Today. We're here with David who is a safety professional and we're gonna be talking today about the importance of high visibility on the roadway thanks for inviting me today. Heather we've got a layout over here that we're gonna take a look at which really drives home the message of safety on the roadway both for pedestrians and drivers. Let's go take a look hi everybody.

  • 00:43 This is the layout that I was talking about shows an average central point roadway with an average central point automobile and we're gonna pretend that we have an average central point driver here in this vehicle and so as you can see we've got a long road way. It's nighttime and we've got several pedestrians walking along this roadway wearing different colored outfits different colored clothing.

  • 01:07 So the first thing that I want you to understand is that at 65 miles an hour that average driver within average car. They need a hundred feet to make a decision about what they're gonna do. If something happens someone steps out in front of them or they see a problem down the road. They need that hundred feet just to make a decision so they're gonna travel 100 feet before they even start to stop. Let's let's imagine that this driver has now made the decision that they're going to stop at this point and they begin to apply the brakes and they're stopping as fast as they can to get to that point and so as you can see this average driver traveling 65 miles. An hour just went 3,300 feet before they were able to get stopped and so as a pedestrian.

  • 01:50 What we learn here is that we want to wear clothing that as bright as possible as a driver depending on what the conditions are. We may try to go slower to try to give ourselves a lot of smaller reaction space and give themselves more time to make a decision. But ultimately we want to be looking at clothing. If we're a pedestrian we want to be looking at clothing that's gonna be bright like oranges and yellows and greens and video. Some reflective ribbon in the in the best or in the clothing that we're wearing now the thing that we're seeing a lot of these days and this is good too or some of these LED harnesses that runners are wearing and that they're putting on their pets.

  • 02:26 Anything you can do to be more visible out there in the dark when you're walking on the streets especially in areas that maybe might be dimly lit. There aren't a lot of lamps or maybe areas where there isn't an established sidewalk. So these are things that we really want you to think about when you're going to be out there okay. So we're out driving at nighttime. It's not pitch-black. It's kind of a dust of time. There's still some light outside but that's a time when pedestrians are out walking around.

  • 02:54 So we're gonna conduct a little experiment where we're gonna have David wearing different levels of visibility. Each time we drive by him and he's going to be wearing white and then a high-vis vest and then dark clothing. I'm gonna be driving at ten miles an hour and we're going to start the driving to where he's standing is gonna be a hundred feet so it'll be interesting to see how well we can see it. So here. We can already see the high visibility vest. Even at 100 feet. You would think the white would be easier to see. But it's really not and the black hoodie is definitely hard to see let's watch that again so from this point he's really hard to see with that hood.

Drivers make sure to look out for pedestrians on the roadway. Pedestrians do whatever you can to be seen our episode thank you so much for watching. Oh you.
